The allocation is made by the index providers MSCI and S&P Dow Jones on the basis of a company's main business segment. Changes in the business model or strategic realignments can lead to a company being assigned to a different industry or even a different sector.

The GICS "Materials" sector comprises companies that are active in the production, processing or refinement of raw materials.
