GICS stands for Global Industry Classification Standard. It is a hierarchical structure that divides listed companies worldwide into four levels: Sector, Industry Group, Industry Sector and Sub-Industry. In total, the system comprises 11 main sectors, over 60 industries and more than 150 sub-categories. It allows a consistent, internationally comparable analysis of economic activities.

Why is GICS important in the financial world?
GICS offers a standardized language for investment decisions. It makes it possible to compare companies with similar business models - regardless of country, stock exchange or company size. Many investment funds, indices and research houses use GICS as a basis for portfolio construction, risk analysis or market screening.
